Empathy - Anaiis Salles

We begin our transformational journey toward empathy having a reliable mental concept of tolerance.  Then we find ourselves bumping into the invisible boundaries where tolerance limits our capacity for deeper relationship.  It is here, where intellect dressed as tolerance acquiesces to the impulses of the heart, that we discover compassion.  Then taking one step further, we dare to ask:  is there a difference between compassion and empathy?  We have compassion for, but we have empathy with.  If there is a distinction to be made, how much greater is the love we give, receive and hold fast when we risk fully feeling how the "other" feels?  Empathy is that place in our heart and soul where judgment dies, and where the making of war ends.

July 18th - Kirtan - Rev. Kent Matthies

The Hindu holy text Bhagavad-gita encourages people to worship and glorify the holy. The practice of kirtan was popularized as an effort to honor the sacred in all. This is an Indian call and response tradition commonly found in yogic traditions in the United States. This service addresses the Small Group Ministry topic: Relationship with Our Bodies.

 lughnasadh.jpg Lughnasadh And Drumming Circle
Sunday, Aug. 1, 7pm in the Grove

Lughnasadh [LU nah sah] was the first harvest festival for the ancient Celts. Berries were on the vines but the grain fields needed attention before they could be harvested. It was a time for taking stock and redirecting energies. The Earth Honoring Traditions Group of USG will celebrate Lughnasadh on Sunday, August 1, at 7:00 PM in the Grove. All are welcome to join the celebration and the Drumming Circle that follows.  Contact Dennis Strain, dennis.strain09@gmail.com; 215-247-3823 for more information.

New Black Box production of
Thurgood Marshall: American Revolutionary
Conceived, written, adapted and directed by Robert Anu & Mel Donaldson
Sunday, August 8, 4pm

Thurgood Marshall was one of America's leading radicals. He helped lead a civil rights revolution in the 20th century that forever changed the landscape of American society. But he is the least well known of the three leading black figures of this last half- century. Martin Luther King Jr., with his teachings of love and non-violent resistance, and pre-Mecca Malcolm X, the fiery orator who advocated a righteous bloody overthrow of an unjust, racist system, are both more closely associated in the popular mind and myth with the civil rights struggle. But Thurgood Marshall, working through the courts to eradicate the legacy of slavery and destroying the racist segregation system of Jim Crow, had an even more profound and lasting effect on race relations than either Martin or Malcolm.

In this "dramatic impression", Thurgood Marshall will share with us some of the important as well as fond and humorous memories and lessons he experienced growing up, as a student, legal activist, soldier, and commander on the front lines and in the strategic councils in the battle for racial equality in the ongoing struggle for civil and human rights.

Monday, August 16, 7pm

Be part of Green Sanctuary's first Menu for the Future Discussion Circle on August 16th. RSVP to be part of circles of 10-12 folks who will meet six consecutive times. We'll seed more community discussion circles on food security and food justice as interest grows. Our goal is to hold at least one discussion circle in every neighborhood of Philadelphia by December of 2011. We are networking this project with Northwest Earth Institute, NIM, and support from Weavers Way Co-op.

Our first Menu for our Future Meet Up will be at Unitarian Society of Germantown in Northwest Philadelphia. The following five discussion circles will meet in group members' homes and include a potluck. Members of your circle bring dishes based on a local food, sharing the story about where their special ingredients came from.

Build grassroots community, volunteer, educate and activate. Your cost: $20 for the Menu for the Future discussion guide. Discussion guides will be recycled. RSVP to Anaiis Salles at
greensanctuary@usguu.org.
