This Week at USG
Our kids need YOU this summer!
We still have a some Sundays to fill for our summer Sunday School program. Please consider signing up for one Sunday to share an interest, talent or hobby with our kids. You'll work with 8-20 kids and an assistant for 45 minutes to one hour in Austin Youth Lodge during the worship service. It's a great way to get to know our children and share something you love doing with them. Ideas for topics include cooking, board games, card games, outdoor games, Earth stewardship, drama, magic tricks, arts and crafts--or whatever you love to do. Dates still available are Aug. 29th & Sept. 5th.
Assistants are also needed so please consider this as well. Please email Jude at jude.henzy@verizon.net to get involved. You'll be glad you did and our kids will be grateful.

Singles of All Ages
Book Review lunch, Aug. 1 at 11:30am after services
Donna Cotzen will lead a discussion of an excellent book dealing with the issues of being single. Solemate by Lauren Mackler (available online, such as at Amazon.com) is an international bestseller. This book, well-written and insightful, is a program to help anyone move towards a happier and more complete life. We will meet at Carolyn Scott's home (unless there's a large response, in which case we'll find another location). Bring your own lunch, but she will provide ice tea. (Allergy alert: dog and cat at Carolyn's home.) Required: participants to have read the first four chapters, at least.

White Allies Against Racism
Sunday, Aug. 1, 9:15am - Daskam Room
The White Allies Against Racism group will hold their second meeting on Sunday, August 1st at 9:15am. We will explore and share our experiences as a foundation for ongoing work and future advocacy and actions. We will also explore and support one another in spiritual growth and healing from the wounds we suffer from living in a racism society. Join us as we deepen our knowledge and work for social justice. Morris Arboretum Guided Tour
Saturday, August 14, 1:30pm
On August 14 there will be a second service auction tour of the Morris Arboretum at 1:30 PM. This will cost $10.00 (check payable to USG given to the tour guide, Tom Schoonmaker) in the event any additional folks wish to join us. USG is Now On YouTube!
Videographers Needed for Events & Sunday Services
The Communications Committee is thrilled to report that we have uploaded our first video to YouTube and to our website. (Visit www.usguu.org & http://www.youtube.com/user/usguutv to have a look). We are looking for volunteers to help us generate more video about our church, our exciting programs, and of the fabulous sermons we hear each week. No experience necessary! The camera is very user-friendly and we will all learn together. If you are interested in helping to take videos and launch this new project, please contact Gloria Smith at admin@usguu.org.
Help Needed to Install Art Weave at Tioga
Friday mornings in July, 9-1pm
"Last fall Ending Racism and Green Sanctuary committees created a wonderful night of fun. The spaghetti cabaret raised over $1200 for our joint committee project at Guadenzia/Tioga Arms Apartments. Suzanne Matlock is now installing the art weave. Your help and an extra ladder is needed any Friday morning in July from 9-1pm down at the site. We also have a work day scheduled on July 17th, from 9-1pm constructing raised beds for the vegetable garden. We'll celebrate at the end of the morning at the site with Joan McMillian and the residents with light refreshments. Rain date is July 24th, same time. Church Office Closed for Vacation

Please note that from Thursday, July 29 through Friday, August 6, the USG church office will be closed as the Office Administrators take some vacation time. If you have any announcements that need to go out from now through Sunday, August 8, please email those to admin@usguu.org by Tuesday, July 27th at 5pm. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause any of you, but we look forward to returning to work on Monday, August 9th, ready to serve the needs of the church.
Laptop Computers Needed
USG is excited to have an Intern from Work Ready who will be working with the Chair of our Green Sanctuary Committee through August 13th. If any of you have a laptop or stand alone computer with wireless capability that could be donated, or on loan for our intern who is working on site at USG, we'd be so very grateful. Nicky Brown Memorial Education Fund

Summer Office Hours - 9:30-1:30
Beginning Monday, June 28th, the USG office will begin summer office hours. The office will be open Monday-Friday from 9:30am-1:30pm. Our Office Administrator will be available at those times to answer your phone calls and assist you in the office. If you need to be at the church at other times, please contact the Office Administrator at admin@usguu.org or call 215-844-1157 to make an appointment
Weekly Green Tip
Looking for a safe and environmentally friendly way to stay hydrated in the heat? Choose a reusable water bottle that is made from BPA-free plastic, or better yet, stainless steel without a plastic liner.
Give Your Dead Battery A New Life. Thank you to all who donated money to recycle the household alkaline batteries dropped off in the last year. Green Sanctuary received $45 from you. We need a total of $79 to ship them to Battery Solutions. If you dropped off batteries here at USG for Green Sanctuary to recycle and have not yet donated, please stop by the Green Sanctuary table and donate some green to be green.
Kilian's Hardware in Chestnut Hill is recycling rechargeable batteries, including phone batteries.
What Green Sanctuary Will Still Recycle for You: those printer ink cartridges and toners. The bin is now in the vestibule off the dining room, just off the courtyard. We work with a small local company, Full Cycle Inkjet, who recycles them and shares a bit of the profit with us. Full Cycle Inkjet also sells refilled cartridges at a great price, so consider using them for your cartridge needs. Visit their website for more information http://www.fullcycleinkjet.com/index.html
To responsibly recycle Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics, go to http://www2.montcopa.org/montco/cwp/view,a,3,q,74873.asp. Montgomery County kindly accepts this stuff from residents (not businesses or institutions) of Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Philadelphia counties. Now that's being a good neighbor.

Fresh Flowers in the Sanctuary
We'd like to experiment with adding fresh flower bouquets to our Sunday services. Many of us have flowering gardens all through the growing season. Also, Produce Junction, any grocery store, or many farmers' markets carry inexpensive bouquets of cut flowers. These bouquets may be memorials to late friends or relatives, in honor of children, friends or a holiday (Happy Bastille Day!), or just a lovely gift from you and your garden. We are not asking for expensive arrangements from florists; we have many vases and containers, as well as helping hands to arrange them. It would be fun to have informal bouquets from congregants, as a way of celebrating the season. We all wish for a life that has meaning, one that connects us more fully to the people in our lives and to the larger community. Frequently, however, we are unsure how to accomplish this. One way is through a spiritual and social connection provided by a caring and supportive community such as you will find at the Unitarian Society of Germantown. The next membership book signing ceremony will be held on Sunday, September 19 at 12:30pm in the Sanctuary. Individuals not ready to become members may still become involved in the church. In fact, visitors are encouraged to get to know us by becoming active in our community before they make the commitment to membership.
Membership at USG involves mutual commitment. The church commits to provide members excellent worship experiences, caring and outreach, opportunities for service, and spiritual education for all ages. Members commit to provide the community with their regular attendance at worship services, work on personal faith development, financial generosity, volunteer service to USG, and service to the larger community. While USG members bring many diverse beliefs to our community, our common theme is mutual respect and support.
