WORSHIP
Sunday services are the heart of the USG experience. Worship for us includes celebrating
the wonder of life and experiencing personal and spiritual growth, moral challenge and
intellectual stimulation. As a non-creedal denomination, we do not espouse a specific
religious set of beliefs. Instead, we draw from various world religious traditions,
philosophy and the sciences to present ideas and concepts to inspire and enlighten, and to
enable us to widen our spiritual and intellectual views.
The order of service (Click here to see some samples) can vary significantly. A typical Sunday service might consist of announcements, lighting of the chalice (Click here to learn about the significence of the chalice), readings, music and a thoughtful sermon. Sometimes there is a silent meditation, a story for children or a sharing of joys and sorrows.
Services are held each Sunday at 11 (10:30 in July and August) and generally last 60-70 minutes. Our minister, Kent Matthies, preaches on average three times a month. Once a month (three times a month in summer), the sermon is given by lay members or guests. Two times a year, our choir presents an all-music service. Once a year, the church school children put on a service.
